If you have ever felt anxious about work issues, perhaps the regular practice of meditation could be an alternative to help you calm those feelings generated by work overload, internal problems, economic crisis, bosses’ changes, difficulties between your colleagues, high expectations from your managers or simply by exhaustion as a result of having been doing the same activities for many years. All of these situations can cause difficulties when concentrating, insomnia, rapid heartbeat, mood swings, discouragement, and instability.
According to an article from The New York Times, a research conducted by the journal Biological Psychiatry found in a study carried out on 35 unemployed men and women undergoing high levels of stress, that meditation notably improved feelings of anxiety and hopelessness. The group that was part of the experiment was divided in two, and previously blood samples were taken and brain scans were given. Half the group was taught formal mindfulness meditation techniques at a retreat center. While the other participants were explained a false mindfulness meditation focused on relaxation and distracting themselves from worries and tensions. Just three days after carrying out these activities, the first group indicated that they felt refreshed and better able to withstand the stress of unemployment. Although many studies have endorsed the benefits of meditation, there are people who still don’t know what it means to remain silent, quiet thoughts, focus on feeling the breath, being aware of the processes of inhalation and exhalation, relaxing the body, and discovering the potential of a calm mind. To achieve these experiences you don’t need to be a yogi, or spiritual, or special, it’s enough to have the will and use the different available techniques: instrumental music, mantras, visualizations, sounds of nature, among others.
